On May 11 in Uzbekistan, an introductory national seminar on Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) in the framework of CAREC’s project “Introduction of PES in Uzbekistan” with the support of the demonstration program of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Environment and Development (APFED Showcase program) and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) will take place. The seminar will be held in partnership with the State Committee on Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).
The aims and objectives of the project and preliminary results of the national expert assessments will be presented and discussed during the seminar. International experience will be reviewed and project plan will be agreed, as well as the pilot project area and local partners will be identified.
This CAREC project aims at assisting the State Committee on Nature Protection of Uzbekistan with implementation of the “Program of Actions on Environment Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2008-2012″. More specifically, the project aims at protecting biodiversity of local mountain ecosystems of Uzbekistan through integration of the concept of rewards for ecosystem services in the environmental management system. The main component of the project will be developing and testing the mechanism of PES in the pilot area in Tashkent region, which will be chosen by the participants.

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) is an economic instrument for more effective management of ecosystems and biodiversity protection in order to implement the operational management measures. The concept of “PES” is defined as a contractual agreement between the buyer (eg farmers, loggers, tourists, residents of the village or city) and seller (eg, association of farmers, forestry, local government, private company) for the provision of ecosystem services and land use in order to conserve these ecosystems.
